Annachlamys leoparda, Linne 1758

Vibrant cherry red colour, and again as with so many Pecten (and people too!) the beauty is to be found hidden inside. Outside a rather dull shell of medium size and there is nothing to indicate what can be found inside; I say 'can' because such brilliant colour is rather exceptional and highly sought after by collectors. There is a closely related species called flabellata which was named by Lamarck in 1819 and I agree that there is some difficulty in telling them apart, generally the leoparda being more robust and a bit larger and no pattern on the cream to pale pink outside.
